There is no great
mystery to the field of freelance writing editing and other creative
tasks. If you have a little natural talent, and a lot of enthusiasm,
plus a willingness to persevere, then you can most certainly build a
career in this field.
Don't worry, you don't
have to have previous experience or qualifications in freelance writing
editing. But whatever experience you do have can be used to advantage.
Let's say you have a previous career as a financial advisor. Great.
That's something you can use for leverage to get you started. You can
suggest articles to magazines and periodicals in the financial sector,
and you may well get commissioned to write some, based on your
specialist knowledge.
Once you have got some
experience under your belt this way, you can then go on to look for
other freelance writing editing opportunities. You now have some samples
of work to show to editors, to demonstrate your capabilities as a
writer. You may find that your field of expertise gradually expands.
From initially writing about personal finance, you may get a commission
to write about corporate banking. This in turn could lead to a
commission for an article on corporate governance, which in turn leads
to one on business and politics. This could then lead to something on
party politics, which leads to a biography of a politician – and so to a
the biography of a sports personality.
Now your freelance
writing editing career has broadened from finance to sports, and you
have samples of work to back your claims in every field. It's amazing
how one thing can lead to another, and how your field of work can grow
and expand in ways you never thought possible.
