Some free lance
writing jobs are much more unusual than others. Of course, most fall
into the conventional category, and comprise fairly routine tasks and
projects. But not all. It's quite surprising what writers can be asked
to do for different clients.
I remember one freel
lance writing job where I was asked to write copy for a toilet cleaner
refill. This was very difficult as I had no information apart from the
information provided on the packet, which consisted of just a few words.
From this I was required to write some twenty press releases,
advertising copy and a whole lot more besides.
I thought that was
hard at the time, but it was nothing compared to some of the other free
lance writing jobs I was required to do at other times. One of the worst
ones was crossing the Baltic Sea on a trawler to write a case study
about the fishing industry in the North Sea. I thought this would be
quite an interesting experience, but it turned out to be something of a
nightmare. The weather was terrible, and I realized that I was much
happier as a writer in the warmth of a cosy house, with no dangerous
seas breaking all around me.
On another occasion, I
was asked to interview a manager who had a reputation for being
difficult. In fact, he turned out to be more than difficult. He was
extremely rude, arrogant and very offensive. It was as much as I could
do to stop myself from punching him in the face. Luckily, I have never
had an experience like that since.
