Contract Writing Jobs
Contract writing jobs are certainly available if you look for them, but they tend to differ in nature from more conventional freelance writer jobs, such as journalism and article submission.
If you are hoping to find a contract writing job, then a good place to start is in the technical writer marketplace. Technical authoring contracts can last anything from three to twelve months, and may even be extended beyond that. Some writers have worked on the same contract writing job for several years, as applications become extended, rewriter or replaced with other products – all of which require documentation.
If you don't have experience in this field, this doesn't necessarily preclude you from getting a contract writing job, although it naturally limits your choice. But you may find that your breadth of skills appeals to a local company who wants someone nearby, and values your enthusiasm more than long experience in this field of business.

The benefit of undertaking contract writing jobs is that you have a measure of security in that you get several months employment, but you are not tied to an employer for a long period of time. This means it is ideal for someone who wants to travel the world, seeing different countries in three or six month segments of time.
